📚 AI Concept of the Week: Large Language Models
Let's talk about Large Language Models (LLMs). LLMs are advanced AI systems designed to understand, process, and generate human-like text based on input data. LLMs are popular due to their remarkable ability to generate coherent, contextually relevant text and their versatility in addressing a wide array of natural language processing tasks, which has revolutionized human-computer interactions and paved the way for innovative AI-driven solutions.

Open AI announces plugins, making OpenAI a platform
OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Plugins, an update to the ChatGPT API that allows users to customize ChatGPT's behavior by combining various plugins. Plugins can be built for different purposes, such as creating conversational agents, answering questions based on a specific document, or conversing in a certain style. This approach enables users to tailor ChatGPT to their needs and makes it more useful across a range of professional applications. OpenAI invites users to provide feedback on this new feature and explore potential use cases to further enhance the API's functionality.
Some of the first plugins are Shopify, Instacard, Zapier, OpenTable, Wolfram, Kayak, and Expedia. It is possible to connect chatGPT to the Internet and access up to date information.
NVIDIA is transitioning from a computer chip-focused company to a full-scale AI service provider with NVIDIA AI Foundations. Targeting enterprises, they aim to assist clients in building custom multimodal LLMs and generative models tailored to specific use cases. NVIDIA has formed significant partnerships with Getty Images, Shutterstock, and Adobe for the generative image aspect of their multimodal offerings, addressing copyright concerns. Adobe has announced Firefly, a new family of creative generative AI models to be integrated into its products, initially targeting image and text effect generation. Firefly aims to provide innovative ways to ideate, create, and communicate while enhancing creative workflows. As a natural progression of Adobe's 40-year history in technology, Firefly is designed to empower users to materialize their ideas exactly as they envision them.
Bard, a ChatGPT competitor from Google is available. Google introduced LaMDA, a model capable of fluid, multi-turn dialogue, and later launched the AI Test Kitchen for people to learn and provide feedback on LaMDA. Bard is an experiment based on LaMDA, acting as a creative collaborator to enhance imagination, productivity, and idea generation. LaMDA is a Transformer-based model, which learns by "reading" trillions of words to recognize patterns in human language and generate reasonable responses.
In his blog post "The Age of AI Has Begun," Bill Gates reflects on the rapid advancements in AI and its transformative potential for various aspects of life. He emphasizes the importance of AI in tackling global challenges like climate change, healthcare, and education while acknowledging the need to address potential risks such as job displacement and privacy concerns. Gates expresses optimism for the role AI can play in driving progress and underscores the need for investments in education, infrastructure, and policy to ensure AI benefits everyone. He concludes by encouraging people to learn more about AI and its implications for society, as it will undoubtedly shape the future of human civilization.
My favorite podcaster just interviewed Sam. They discussed AI, entrepreneurship, and technology's societal impact. Sam would share insights on running OpenAI, while both exchanged ideas on AI's role in global challenges and the importance of responsible development.
🎙️ Interview of the week: Energy Demand Planning using AI
Learn how to use AI for complex use cases such as anticipating demand and energy generation to build accurate forecasts. Machine Learning helps leverage data to enable energy companies to become safer, more reliable, and, more efficient. The main pain points are:
Generating too much energy can lead to energy spillage, while under generation can result in widespread blackouts
It's difficult to predict the precise behavior of renewable resources such as wind
Building optimization solutions with the uncertainty involved can be computationally expensive
IBM developed an Industry Accelerator that combines all the disjointed parts of forecast, optimization, and planning into a seamless and coherent end-to-end solution. I interviewed Aakanksha Joshi, a Senior Data Scientist from the IBM Data Science team at Client Engineering walk through the use case, with a live demo included.
